I believe intentionality in relationship is important. In couples counseling, I often ask each partner:
- “When in your personal life have you experienced success, accomplishment or fulfillment?”
- “What did it take for you to experience this success, accomplishment or fulfillment?”
Most often the answers include: “hard work, effort, planning, determination, sacrifice, learning new things, focus and goals.”
Next I ask:
- “When in your personal life have things been fulfilling, good, or successful without being intentional? Where the success just happened.”
- “When have you been intentional in your relationship, similar to the successful experiences above?”
What would your answers be?
We often believe the day we say “I do” or make a commitment to another, the marriage or relationship will “just happen”, “just workout”, or “be good”. Consequently, we won’t typically experience accomplishment, success, or fulfillment without intentionality. So why do we believe the opposite to happen in our relationship?
